Imagine how much easier your life would be if you could retrieve individual mailboxes and individual mail messages ("brick-level" and "message-level") without going through the stress of a full Information Store restoration. This typically involves restoring your entire Exchange Server information store (which could be gigabytes of mail data) to a non-production Exchange Server and re-importing the individual mail items that you require. This could take hours of hard work and frustration - imagine doing this every time someone deletes an important email!
There had to be an easier way and BackupAssist's new Exchange Mailbox Add-on is the solution. It extracts Exchange Server mail data to separate PST files, allowing you to restore individual mailboxes and "drag-and-drop" individual emails, calendars, tasks, notes and contacts back into your Exchange Server. Yes, it really is that simple. Restore individual mailboxes and email in minutes rather than hours. Plus, there's the added benefit of having your mail neatly grouped and ready for burning to DVD for offsite archiving.
The Add-on is intelligently designed for fast brick-level backup, automatically scheduling daily exports which merge new data into backup files on disk. As only new data is exported, backup time is reduced to a few minutes each day for the typical small business.
This feature really is an unexpected bonus. We originally wanted to keep each PST file small for manageability, so we decided to sort the email messages by date, and back them up to separate PST files. The result was individual folders of PST files, separated by year, quarter or month (eg. 2006-Q1, 2006-Q2). Lo and behold, you can then burn these folders of PST files to DVD, or FTP them offsite, giving you a 2nd copy archive of your emails! This is especially useful for compliance and legal scenarios where you may need to produce separate archives of your mail data for designated time periods.
So not only do you get a brick-level backup of Exchange, you get basic archiving capability at no extra cost!
Forget proprietary backup file formats - we've gone with PST (and made it robust and reliable). This is same format used by Microsoft Outlook for storing emails. You can open the PST files in Outlook, without BackupAssist even being installed.
This is not the case with other vendors that use proprietary file formats, and require you to have their software installed in order to restore. You have to ask yourself whether or not you can retrieve your emails two, five or ten years down the track. Proprietary formats rise and fall but PST is supported by Outlook 2007 and beyond.
Either manually open the PST file in Outlook and copy deleted items across. Or for larger volume tasks, run the Microsoft Mailbox Merge Wizard to mass-import mailbox items and this will let you use filters.
